Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko was the last TV show to pop out of what has so far been a very crowded April. While it doesn’t look like a sure thing by any means, the series did show some potential.
Hentai Ouji’s first episode mainly relied on fun, if generic comedy, with hints that it was holding a few serious cards in its hand for future episodes. The perversion factor was a bit awkward, if deliberately so, and it’ll only get less fun to watch as time goes by. Still, it’s possible to support a comedy where the main character is stupidly outspoken by taking him to the limit and surrounding him with great straight-men, and there was enough energy from the male lead dealing with the rest of the cast to indicate that that may be what we’re looking at here.
It’s fairly obvious where the show is going – the female lead is going to get her facial expressions back and hit the male lead with the smile that launched a thousand ships. It could keep up the charm factor up until it hits that point, or it could fall flat. I’ll give it another episode, for now; we’ll see if next week is more cheap perv-slap humor or if the moderately enjoyable cast can keep the story afloat.
