Charactology 2012 (Group 3, Match 1): Lupin or Rikka

(Check out the stickied post for the full bracket.)

Finally halfway through the first round, we’re getting to the appearance of one of out bigger favorites; the legendary, looney phantom thief with a snazzy green jacket and a rap sheet long enough to span the globe. Oh, and some girl with Middle School Disease.

Arsene Lupin III

How is this character great in their own universe?

Lupin is legendary for a reason. He’s got such a style and coolness to everything he does, even when failing to get with Fujiko. No matter what Lupin does, it’s rad as hell. Lupin, the man with a convoluted plan for every scenario; it’s incredible watching him pull off the most ridiculous heists in the world.

How would they be great in the other’s universe?

I really just think Lupin would make everything better. Plus, Chuu2 could have used more comedy. How would the chuuni delusions fit in with the actually crazy life of Lupin III? Who doesn’t want to see them be even crazier? Really though, Lupin is charismatic enough that he can fit in anywhere.

Takanashi Rikka

How is this character great in their own universe?

I may seem somewhat emotional when I say this, but Rikka is just kind of adorable. She doesn’t see eye to eye with most of the denizens of her high school, but she’s confident and a great overacter in a way that’s amazingly cute, both because of the way she creates exaggerated drama and the way Yuuta slaps her in the forehead rapidfire. The tragic part of her backstory isn’t exactly dramatic hot sauce, but the way she acts in everyday life makes her an entertaining personality.

How would they be great in the other’s universe?

When we plug a delusional high-schooler into the life of history’s greatest phantom thief, we get something different. She would represent a departure from Lupin’s clowny personality; less joking around while being competent and more being overconfident and shooting herself in the foot. I imagine her issuing a bold challenge to Zenigata from the rooftops, complete with Phoenix Wright-tier finger pointing, before slipping and needing to activate a portable airplane at the last minute to avoid pancaking on the concrete. It would be very cute, at a minimum.
