Just the subtitle file for the episode of Urasawa Naoki’s Manben featuring Manga Taisho recipient Higashimura Akiko. They comment on footage the crew took of Higashimura’s studio, mainly captured on the deadline day for her newer series, Yukibana no Tora. It also discusses Higashimura’s other work, particularly Kakukaku Shikajika.
The subs I did are timed for the raw file I was able to find, which is 46 minutes long and has the actual Manben content kicking off about 37 seconds in. I got that here.
Anyway, the .ass file is here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/ev8eb3swav16n25/Manben_Higashimura_ENG.ass
Edit – It’s on youtube now, apparently:
Note: Please don’t beat me up about the timing of the dialogue subtitles. The dialogue in the show itself is quite rapid back and forth and I purposely let them linger on-screen for a couple seconds to make sure people had a reasonable amount of time to read them. I did my best, kay?
Personal note: The translation took about 2 weeks of on-and-off work, and it was super fun. There’s one more article I have in the pipeline now that should take a bit less time, being like half a magazine page instead of 6000 words requiring typesetting as this one did.
Thanks! I’ll add your subs to the blog so that people see it.
It doesn’t work with vlc 😦
I’m away from my comp for the weekend, but I’ll look into that and other stuff starting Monday.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE THIS !!!
Thank you :3
Thanks for your hard work! I saw it on youtube. The documentary was super informative for me as a manga fan even though I had no clue who Higashimura is. Would be amazing if you could find the time and motivation to do the rest of the series!!!
I did this one as a one-time thing, and I’m not generally interested in doing subtitles for a number of reasons. Other people who enjoy doing subtitles will have to do other episodes. And I suspect they will, as it’s extremely good TV.
Thanks for subbing this. Averaging 100 pages a month is just insane.
Thank you so much for translating this! Higashimura is truly a genius and it is inspiring to watch her work.
Thank you so so so much! I enjoyed this so much and appreciate all the hard work with translation!
Thanks for subbing this. I am a huge fan of Higashimura Akiko.
Amazing. Thank you for your work. Higashimura is one of the most unique modern manga female authors, so taking a look at her creative process was absolutely fascinating.
thank you very very much
Thank you very much !
Thank you very much for the subs!
Thanks a lot for subbing this. Very interesting to watch!
Thanks for translating this. It’s pretty rare to see regular TV like this get subtitled.
Just finished watching it on youtube. Thanks so much for translating it!
Thank you for your hard work! Please do more if you feel up to it.
Thank you so much for subbing this! It was an interesting watch and I greatly appreciate your hard work subbing it all! ^^
Thank you for subbing Manben. I’m an amateur comic hobbyist and my process has never felt in line with what I’ve seen of Western artists and cartoon strip authors. I figured I was just an outlier with a strange process. With this series, I finally felt real kinship with a group of artist(s). I empathized with every sentiment, from sketching roughs on a clipboard to ghostdrawing the same line before finally putting down the most expressive iteration. I have had hand pains like Yamashita-sensei and redrawn finished illustrations like Higashimura-sensei (just to capture the right expression). Every grievance, every celebration that these mangaka expressed was something I have personally felt. Now I know others have felt this way too. Thank you for facilitating a wonderful experience.
Thanks really a bunch for making this available for us!!
I beg you if you have had any fun in doing this, pleeeaaaseeee do the same magic with the other episodes of this series. I could only find S01E01 and S01E03 on youtube and would really much appreciate if the rest would be available as well! 🙂
I don’t want to push you into things you don’t wanna do, but if you liked it so far, so did many other people and will do in future times! 🙂
Greez and many thanks
Just swooped in to say a huge THANK YOU for your translations on this series so far!
You can tell that it took a lot of time and effort to put together so thank you very much for the dedication.
I’d have to echo the sentiments of the guy above that, if you do enjoy this and have adequate spare time on your hands, please do consider working through the rest of the series.
Thanks again, and Happy new year from Essex (UK)

Thank you! what a wonderful episode this was!
Thank You 🙂
Thank you for uploading the subtitled videos to YouTube. I’ve watched some of them already, and even though I am not all that interested in anime or manga, watching the workflow of those japanese mangaka is interesting in and by itself.
Thank you soo much
Thank you for translating and subbing this.
I have timed and typeset subs before and I know it is hard work (even when it’s fun it’s still hard too ^_^ )
It looks like you might not add to this blog often these days, but if you see this comment and you happen to be in the Los Angeles area during February/March of 2019, you might enjoy the Urasawa Naoki exhibition that Japan House in Hollywood is hosting.
Anyway, thanks again. This episode made me cry a little, like many others of this wonderful show do. It is beautiful to see how these amazing artists work.
Thank you for the translation ! Great work !
Thank you for doing this! I’ve watched this on youtube like 3 times over the past few years, and it wouldn’t have been possible if not for your translation
Thank you for the subs, your time and effort were most appreciated!
