Animetics @ Colossalcon (and Panel Schedule)

Colossalcon 2013 is coming up in less than a week, and I’m proud to announce that the Animetics Crew will be doing no less than 9 hours of panels. If you happen to be in Sandusky, Ohio from June 7-9 (we won’t be there on Thursday) for whatever reason, come check us out at any of the following times:

noitaminA: The Late-Night Block that Revolutionized Anime: 8pm Friday, 1 hr
The History of Weekly Shonen Jump: From Late-Comer to Front-Runner: 10pm Friday, 2 hrs
The Best Anime Directors You’ve Never Heard Of: 11am Saturday, 1 hr
The Star System 2.0: A Naoki Urasawa Primer: 4pm Saturday, 1 hr
Manga Japanese Critics Love: 7pm Saturday, 2 hrs
Anime vs Manga: Why Does This Adaptation Suck?: 10am Sunday, 1 hr
Studio Gonzo Then and Now: Geniusing All the Way to Bankruptcy: 3pm Sunday, 1 hr

Since this is a pretty full con schedule, and we’ll be at a convention, expect the blog to go quiet between posting on Devil Survivor 2 on Thursday and the MOB opening round on Saturday. We’ll still be updating as usual for the first half of this week, though!

Lists Are Fun to Make: Favorite Anime Episodes by Title

Full Disclosure: I like making lists. This particular list is the result of an afternoon of me sitting down and trying to list all the anime episode titles I remember. This correlates pretty well with my actual favorite anime episodes, because I’ve seen most of them enough times to remember their titles. When making this one, I set myself a limit at 60 and reached it fairly quickly. After making the list, I actually ranked them. So yeah, had a lot of fun with this one.

Sell Me in 20 Minutes: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko was the last TV show to pop out of what has so far been a very crowded April. While it doesn’t look like a sure thing by any means, the series did show some potential.

Sell me in 20 Minutes: Valvrave the Liberator

I dropped Majestic Prince today after finishing episode 2. It seemed confused about where it was going and the charm of the characters was wearing off pretty quickly. Fortunately, this season still had one more mecha left in stock. In a warehouse. On a shelf decently close to the top.

Sell Me in 20 Minutes: Haiyore Nyaruko-san W

I suspect Sunday’s anime lineup will feel less quiet once Suisei no Gargantia gets to episodes I haven’t already jumped the gun on watching. For now, all there is to talk about is one returning evil deity.

Sell Me in 20 Minutes: DD Hokuto no Ken, Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride, and Aku no Hana

In contrast to a Thursday featuring a pair of newer directors, Friday was all about veterans coming back to their native style. With results that, frankly, could have been way better.

Sell Me in 20 Minutes: Dansei Bunri no Crime Edge

There’s no way getting around this, so I’m just going to lay it out straight; I’m a huge devotee of old Studio Gonzo. So even if the brand is basically meaningless now, I always get excited when I hear they have a project.

One more bit of full-disclosure regarding me before I get to the show itself, since it is to hair as Mysterious Girlfriend X is to drool – I enjoyed Mysterious Girlfriend X. The superior direction and creativity behind that show was enough to offset its fundamental weirdness. I guess that also qualifies as a warning for the faint of heart, as DBnCE is also quite weird.
